The website of Independent Space Index receives a major update in early 2026.
The new website includes chronological documentation of the annual festival, and plentiful archive material – public formats, items, and editorial content – in a filterable database.
Concatenated archive items appear throughout the entire site as “building blocks”. This structure supports the public directory of independent spaces, and offers relational context to the activities of a decentralized network of exhibition spaces.
The graphic design has received sensible updates as well. Independent Space Index was hand-coded in 2017, based on a simple design choice: red lettering set in Times New Roman on a plain background. The distinctive palette and an unassuming design remain an instantly recognizable part of our network’s identity, allowing each member space exactly as much or as little publicity as they wish.
Over the years, Independent Space Index has become an important reference, documenting activities of a diverse, international, and decentralized scene. With the relaunch, we hope to support the work of journalists, researchers, and professionals – and, above all, help an interested audience develop individual tools for discernment.
The relaunch was implemented by treat.agency and supported by Wirtschaftsagentur Wien.
